12/10 Week's Current Event

CAIRO (AP) — Several hundred Egyptians marched toward the presidential palace in Cairo Sunday to protest the president's decision to keep the referendum on a disputed draft constitution scheduled for next week on time.
The protests were noticeably smaller than other rallies over the past week, possibly reflecting the opposition's bind in the face of the partial concession by President Mohammed Morsi, who agreed to annul his Nov. 22 decrees that gave him near unrestricted powers and immunity from judicial oversight.
Despite scrapping the earlier decree, Morsi stuck to the Dec. 15 referendum on a constitution hurriedly adopted by his Islamist allies during an all-night session late last month.
"This has confused many, who opted to stay home," said Tarek Shalaby, a protester and member of the leftist Revolutionary Socialist group, as he marched toward the palace. "But we should continue our pressure. We can't lose our momentum."
Shalaby said he has still not decided whether he will vote no or boycott the referendum.
The opposition National Salvation Front called on supporters to rally against the referendum. The group is holding a late night meeting Sunday to decide on their next move.
The opposition said Morsi's rescinding of his decrees was an empty gesture because the decrees had already achieved their main aim of ensuring the adoption of the draft constitution. The edicts had barred the courts from dissolving the Constituent Assembly that passed the charter and further neutered the judiciary by making Morsi immune from its oversight.
Still, the lifting of the decrees could persuade many judges to drop their two-week strike to protest what their leaders called Morsi's assault on the judiciary. An end to their strike means they would oversee the referendum as is customary in Egypt.
In his late night announcement, Morsi replaced the scrapped decrees with a new one that doesn't give him unrestricted powers, but allows him to give voters an option if they decide to vote "no" on the disputed draft charter.
In the new decree, if the constitution is rejected, Morsi would call for new elections to select 100-member panel to write a new charter within three months. The new panel would then have up to six months to complete its task, and the president calls for a new referendum with a month.
The process adds about 10 more months to Egypt's raucous transition, but could answer some of the opposition demands of a more representative panel to write the charter, if the elections are not swept by Islamists.
Members of a so-called Alliance of Islamists forces warned it will take all measures to protect "legitimacy" and the president — comments that signal further violence may lie ahead.

  1. This artical is about the protest in Egypt. Hundereds of people in Egypt protested aginst his laws. He is trying to turn all the power to himself. He is also turning the Islamic and Christian country to just Islamic. Many people are disagreeing with him.

This can connect to me in a way. We have had a civil war in the U.S. The fighting may cause a civil war between Christian and Islamic cultures. this may keep people fighting so we can't get recorces we need from Egypt.

  2. This article is about how the people in Egypt don't like the president. The people are protesting outside the president's palace. Morsi is trying to get immunity in his position. If judges lift his immunity it would take 10 more months to transfer to a new president.

How this relates to me is because I was just learning about Egypt. We along with Egypt have a president but there he is trying to make in a monarchy. That's why everybody is protesting. They are attempting to return it to a democracy. Things aren't very different here than in Egypt.

  3. This is about the president of Egypt presenting a new law. This law would make him all powerful and would raise him above other laws. This means the president could commit a crime and get away with it and not be impeached. It is also about his plan if the law is not approved.

This connects to me because we also have a president that could just as easily present this law to us. I do not believe this would be approved in our country because it would be proved unconstitutional. This also relates to me because we trade with Egypt. If Egypt stops trading with us then we may be cut off or have limited supplies of natural gas, textiles, aluminum, etc.

  4. I think this article was about Egypt going into civil war with itself. The problem was that the president passed a law making him have more power than anyone else. The president is going to join 100 people together to pass a new law to help his country.A riot took place in front of the presidentle palace.

This effects me becuase a riot may cause a major problem in the country. This also effects me becuase there is already problems in our country. I think in the time being there will be problems with the making of laws of there country. If we ever have a crisis like that it would be the same way.

This connects to me because we also have a president that could put a law that puts him in a higher power than he is
now. They are attempting to return the government to a democracy. This also connects to me because we had a Civil War and if Egypt had a civil war it would stop trade and would hurt our service economy.

  6. This article is about how Egyptians protesters are against the presidents new laws. The laws give more power to him.Their president Mohammad Morsi wants to turn the country into an Islamic country rather than what it was an Islamic and Christian. This was my summary about the article.

This is how the articles connects to me.If Egypt had a civil war form from this the U.S. would most likely be there allies in it and support the Christians in it.The U.S. is allies with Egypt and if they went into war we wold probably not get a lot of oil from them when it happens. From this point of view we would have to get it some where else.Another way I can connect to it is that our own country had its own civil war.

  7. The artical is about Egyptians not liking their new president.
The reason is because the president is muslim so there for he is making rules Muslims want and not what the Christians want.
That could lead into a war.

This artical affects me as an American because we don`t fight over religion. It also affects me because are president is for all the people. He is not just for his religion. It also affects me because if there is a war over this it will be dumb.

This article connects to me because us as Americans have a president that could yell us his law. This also relates to me because we trade with Egypt and if they stop trading with us then we will get cut off and have limited supplies.

    1. The article was about Egypts president trying to turn down all protests and take all the power.Egypt has a serious disliking with the president of Egypt.President Morsi is trying to be safe in his president position. He is trying to get rid of Christianity and make it all Islamic.

How this affects me as an American because we also have a type of government. And if this happens to egypt it makes me wonder if it could happen some day to us.This article caught me in many ways and I think it could catch you too!

  9. This artical was about the president of Egypt creating a new law. This law would make him a all powerful leader. He could commit any crime and get away with it.Mohammad Morsi wants to turn the country into an Islamic country. If judges lift his immunity it would take 10 months to transfer to a new president.

This artical connects to me because we also have a president. He could also make this law.I don't think Obama would pass this law because it would be unconstitutional. This also connects to me is we trade with Egypt.Egypt could stop trading with us and then we would have limited supplies on gas, textiles, and other things.

  10. This article is about the Egyptians were protesting against their president, Mr. Mohammed Morsi, for making new laws and giving himself more power. This man also wants to turn the country in to an all Islamic country instead of an Islamic and Christian country.

This article can connect to me as an American because the Egyptians may go into a civil war. The U.S. is pretty much an allied to Egypt so we may get stuck in the war and we have already had one of our own. Also we may trade some things with Egypt that we may need and they wouldn't be able to trade with us if they were busy in a war. One last reason that this could affect me is because our president could make laws we don't agree with and we could go in another civil war of our own.

  11. This article is about the president of Egypt trying to pass a new law. Mohammed Morsi is trying to change all of Egypt's religion to Islamic. The other religion is christianity. There are amny protesters against this law. However there are people who agree with the presidents choice. This law he is trying to set should have, could have, might get him impeached. He wants more power over his country.
This article affects me as an american citizen because this could hurt our economy. If other countries decide they don't like the things that Morsi is doing, then they might stop trade with Egypt. This situation would send our trading pattern crashing down. Of course this would be very bad in every way possible. Things would go downhill from that.

  12. This artical is about Egypt's leader passing a law/rule making him immortal to judical law.The people of egypt should do somthiong about it. This law/rule might have a chance of creating a civil war. A civil war might be a decision for some protestors.

This affects me as an american because a civil war could break out. And our president Barack Obama may send over a great amount of money to help with the war which will increase the 16 trillion debt he has already caused us.Personaly I think we should worrie about our problems first and then help other countries.

  13. This article is about how Egyptians were protesting against their president. His name is Mohammed Morsi. He is making new laws and giving himself more power. He wants to turn the country into one religion which is Islamic instead of Christian and Islamic.

This article affects me because if our president does the same thing it would be unconstitutional. It also affects me because if they go into war and the U.S. want to help the protesters than it would hurt our economy. We could also stop trade with Egypt if the president doesn't like what Mohammad Morsi is doing. That is how i believe this article affects me.

  14. This article is about Mohammed Morsi, the president of Egypt, trying to pass a law to get rid of Christianity and have all Islamic. Many people are taking to the streets to protest at the capital building. This is not good for the president Morsi because many people are angry and it is getting pretty violet. There is a possibility he could get impeached.

This affects me because our government could disagree and get involved with whats going on in Egypt. The U.S.A gets a lot of supplies from Egypt and we could decide to close all ties with Egypt. We probably wouldn't have all the things we have to today. The U.S.A gets a lot of stuff from Egypt and our economy would go down from this situation.

  15. I believe this article is about how Egypt's president, Mohammed Morsi, decided to create a law to make him more powerful than everyone else. He also thinks that since he is the most powerful he can force people to believe in one religion. Many people think that this is not right to force people to believe in something that they don't. If the president keeps trying to force people to do stuff they don't want to do Egypt might get violent.

This article affects me as an American because if Egypt goes into war with itself many problems would keep Egypt from being productive. If there are many things that Egypt doesn't get done Egypt will be behind in money because they wouldn't have anything made to sell. Also here in America we have to send people over to Egypt to fight for them. Also this could affect us because we would be forgetting to take care of ourselves here. This is how this article affects me as an American.

This affects me as a American because if they go into war and the u.s. wants to help the protesters than it would hurt the aconomy. We could also stop the trade with Egypt. This could only happen if the president does not like what Mohammed Morsi is doing.Thats how it affects me as a American.

  17. In this article they are talking about how the president of Egypt, Mohammad Morsi, is trying to get rid of Christianity. He wants to change their religion to be all Islamic. Many people are disagreeing and protesting. They think he might be trying to get full power over Egypt and dictate.

This affects me because this could cause a civil war and the U.S. has had a civil war. Also maybe if it got really bad the U.S. may try to get involved with it. It could consider to force our military to go in and help. Maybe they could stop him from trying to dictate and have a democratic solution to their issues like our country does.

  18. This article is about Egypt's president Mohammed Morsi agreeing to his November 22 decrees. Then hundreds of Egyptians went to the presidential palace in Cairo, Egypt on Sunday to protest. Egypt can't have another president for 10 years if the judges lift Morsi's immunity. Many of the people in Egypt are not agreeing with Morsi. The people of Egypt are disagreeing so much that there might be a war starting.
I can connect to this article because i hope this doesn't happen in the U.S. because i know that many people did not want Obama back in office. So, i hope he doesn't do anything to make a lot of people angry and disagree with him. If he does do something to make people mad then there most likely will be a big protest.

  19. Several hundred Egyptians are protesting aginst thier president. Thier presidents name is Mohammed Morsi. Mohammed Morsi wants all of Egypt to be Islamic and no Christians. For this he might get impeached.

This afects me as an American because the peresident might chose to send tropes to Egypt. I don't think we should send out trops to another country. Yet I do.I think we should because they have a right to be Christian if they want to.

  20. This artical is about protests in Egpyt. The protests are happing because they want their president to step down. President Mohammad Morsi witch is the current president of Egypt. The protest are about the president getting rid of Chirstianity inEgypt.

This would effect me as an American because if the U.S. got rid of Christianity the people that went to church would do a lot of protesting at the White house. This would also effect me as an American because we do a lot of trading with Egypt. Another way that it would effect me as an American is thousands of churchs would close in the U.S. and many people would not believe in God. The last reason it would effect me as an American is it would cause war between Egypt's president and the rebals for Christianity.

  21. I think the artical is about egyptians protesting against their president. His name is Mohammed Morsi. He is making new laws to get rid of Christianity and have all of Islamic religion. It's possible that the new president can get impeached.

This artical affects me because our goverment could get mad and get involved. If our goverment gets involved it could start a war. If they go into war our economy could get affected and our gas prices could go up and other things. And since the president is saying only Islamic religion it wouldn't be able to go to Egypt.

  22. This article displays in detail the protesting and fighting in Egypt over the constitution not being changed . It also talks about the news that their president is lifting his pharoah-like decrees he made early this year. Also, It is believed that because the president lifted those decrees the judges in Egypt that have issued themselves on a strike will come back so that they may vote on the president's desicion. Many people are angry about this and have been the ones making the protests, which are reasonably smaller than any seen in Egypt before.

The issues stated in this article affect me, an american citizen, because if these issues in Egypt get any worse the united states may have to intervene. I wish this would not happen because there are so many other problems that we already have to deal with. Egypt would just be something more to add to that stack. Also, the people in Egypt have already had large problems in past years and I hope they don't have to go through that pain again.

  23. This article is about the President Mohammed Morsi, passing a law of getting rid of Christianity and having Islamic. People are talking to the protest at the capital. This is a possibility he could get removed from public office from wrong doing. This is not good for the president, because many people are mad at him.

This article affects me because our government could get into Egypt's problem. The U.S gets a lot of goods and supplies from the country Egypt. We might have to close from getting all of the goods and supplies from Egypt. We are lucky to have all the supplies and goods from Egypt and everywhere.

This affects me as a American because if they go into war and the united states wants to help the protesters it would hurt the economy. It could stop the trade with Egypt. This could only happen if the president does not like what Mohammed Morsi is doing. That is how it affects me as a American.

  25. The article this week is about the president of Egypt, Mohammed Morsi. He tries to pass a law that gets rid of Christains and making the whole country Islamic. This causes the people to protest on the streets of Cairo to capital city. He tries to fix what he has done but he still might get kicked out if the office.

This affects me as an American because we get supplies from Egypt that we need. Out of anger Obama might shut down the trading, then we wouldn't have what we needed and Egypt wouldn't be getting as much money as they needed. This also affects me because this could cause a civil war in Egypt, and naturally as Americans we would go to help them, and we would be putting our men in danger because alot of Americans are Christians.

  26. This artical is about the Egyptians protesting. They are protesting against their president. His name is Mohammed Morsi. They are protesting because Morsi thinks everyone should be Islamic not Christian.

This effects me as a American because I think every body should be what they want to be. I don't believe that anyone has the right to tell you what religion you should believe in. I do not blame the people that are protesting because they are standing up for what they believe in. I would stand up for what I thought was right too.

  27. This article was about how in Egypt, Mohammed Morsi is trying to change the religion. In Egypt their religions are Islam and Christian. Morsi is trying to change it all to Islamic religion. This may cause a civil war between the two religions.

This may affect me because if they do have a war the United States might get involved with it. Also I think they should get to choose what religion they want like we do. It also should not matter what religion you want to follow. This is how the article could and does affect me.

  28. This aticle was one of my favorites. It was about how several hundred Egyptians marched towards the presidental palace last week. This march was protest against a decision to keep the referendum the way it is.It was also in protest of president Morsi annuling his Nov. 22 decrees that gave him unrestricted power.

This affects me as an American because Egypt is a trade partner with us.If there is conflict in Egypt then we can't get the things we need like oil. If there was conflit we wouldn't be able to make peace with Egypt. Most of all the would be a civli war between the Christrians and Islamic in Egypt.

  29. This article is about the Egyptians protest. The Egyptians protested against the presidents laws. The Egyptians are disagreeing with the law that states everyone should be Islamic instead of Christian. The Egyptians think different.

This article effects me as an American because if we had to be a certain religion, then lots of organizations would have to leave the country and go to a country that has their religion. Everybody should have the right to choose which religion to believe in. You can`t force someone to believe in something they don`t. I agree with the Egyptians, this is unfair.

  30. This artcal is about Egyptians are tring to start a war with their own country. They are wanting their own rights. The are fighting against the pesidents laws. They disagree with him saying that people can't have their own religion. They wish they could have their own thoughts.

This could effect my life if some Egyptians ameto the U.S. they could try protest against any of our laws and start a war. We could get hurt or wourse, people could die! So if somthing don't happen fast between the Egytian people and their president. If it doesn't ome pople couldget hurt and or die. The Egyptians are totally right.

This affects me in America because it could hurt our economy. If other countrys dont like what he is doing they may stop trade with Egypt itself. If some stuff we get through Egypt comes from other countrys we wont get it and might not be able to survive.this would be bad for our country.then from there on we would be in a bad situation.

this artica relates to me because the gas prices are going up and its made a lot of people are going to go nuts because we dont have that much money.the artical also mentiond that riots have gone on strike because them cutting tewachers sallerys.they have mention about a war that may happen because of it.i hope that they see that they are hurtting our goverment.
