1/21 Current Event

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Four years after making history by becoming the first African-American president, Barack Obama will kick off his second term on Monday with a scaled-back inauguration that reflects the tempered expectations for his next four years in office.
Lingering high unemployment, bitter political battles and a divisive re-election campaign have punctured the mood of optimism and hope that infused Obama's 2009 inauguration after a sweeping election win.
This time, Obama's inauguration will feature smaller crowds and a reduced slate of inaugural balls and parties to match the more subdued tenor of the times.
When Obama raises his right hand to be sworn in by Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts outside the U.S. Capitol at 11:55 a.m. ET (1655 GMT), it will be his second time taking the oath in 24 hours.
He had a private swearing-in on Sunday at the White House because of a constitutional requirement that the president be sworn in on January 20. Rather than stage the full inauguration on a Sunday, the main public events were put off until Monday.
Obama begins the day worshipping at St. John's Episcopal Church across from the White House. He will then take the oath again and deliver his inaugural address from the Capitol's west front overlooking the National Mall, where a crowd of up to 700,000 is expected to watch.
That is down significantly from the record 1.8 million people who jammed Washington in 2009 for Obama's first inauguration.
As Inauguration Day dawned and people streamed through the wintry cold toward the Capitol grounds, Washington was in security lockdown, with thousands of police and National Guard troops deployed, barricades up and Humvee military vehicles blocking major intersections.
Outside the White House on Pennsylvania Avenue, an elaborate presidential viewing stand, encased in bullet-proof glass, awaited Obama and other VIPs to watch the inaugural parade.
Even though the atmosphere lacked the euphoria of Obama's first inauguration, many of his supporters celebrated through the night.
"Yes, I can sense the inauguration is not as big as last time, but there is nonetheless excitement," said Carrie` Solages, a New York state legislator, as she attended a pre-inaugural ball late on Sunday. "We are still here to be a part of history."
At the Hawaii State Society inaugural ball, dancers swung their hips to traditional songs, and some partygoers sported tuxedos with Hawaiian-print cummerbunds as they ate suckling pig.

  1. This artical was about the 2013 president inaguration.Brack Obama made his second speach for the inaguration.Although the numbers were down in atindance was down plunging from 1.8 million pepole (from 2009) to just 700,000 pepole. But this is actually the sencon inaguration thi year Brack Obama had a private one in the white house.

This afects me as an American because what happens in office might just change my life forever. And i would like to know what are his main topics that he is going to hit hard on. This inauguration is a big deal just like the ones in the past.

  2. In the current event Barack Obama did his anogeration. He is our first Afircan American president. He did it on the 20th. He did it on the 21 in front of the public because he had to do it on the 20th but it was a Sunday. Not as many people came this year. Obama is president again.

This can affect me in many ways. We all hope he does his promises and to be a good leader. He should help our goverment and not make our goverment worse. Obama can or can not help our goverment.

  3. This artical is about Barrok Oboma doing the oath of office. It is also about the big parade after the oath of office.also the 3 books he touched and said his oath 1 of those books was martin Luther king Juniors.

This artical affects me because it was Martin Luther king Juniors birthday the day the black people got equal rights. This also affected me because it is the day the president of the United States of America become president once more. This artical also affects me because it was a day of celebration.

  4. This article was about how President Barack Obama was inaugurated on Sunday at 11:55 a.m. The president was inaugurated and a inauguration is the thing that reflects the expectations of President Barack Obama. President Barack Obama was in a bullet-proof glass box to watch the inauguration parade. President Barack Obama later went to the inaugural ball, dancers danced to traditional songs. some of the partygoers wore tuxedos with Hawaiian-print cummerbunds as they ate their food of suckling pig.

This article affects me because President Barack Obama could lower or heighten our dept. President Barack Obama is the one who is now the president of the U.S.A and has control. the president of the U.S.A is the one who could stop all dept and use our money wisely and should. If we get deeper our children in the future before they are even born could owe thousands. If president Obama would listen to the cries of some of the American people he would know just what to do.

  5. This acticale is about how the president, Barack Obama, had his inauguration. This is the second time he has done this, for his seconed term. They held a inaugural ball where there was a lot if dancers swaying to the music in celebration of Mr. Obama's second term as president.

This affects me as an american because it teaches me more about what the president does and how everything connected to the president happens. This can also affect me because I may decide to run for president when I am older and will need to know everything. I think people around our age should know about politics and everything due to presidency.

  6. This article is about the inauguration day. President Obama is now in his second term in office. After the inauguration President Obama went to St. Johns Episcopal Church. During the inauguration president Obama was in a sealed bulletproof box with other VIPs to watch the inaugural parade.

This article affects me because the new president is now in process and he is now in great power. He is now in power of America. He now can lower our debt or he can higher the debt. He can help other countries that are underdeveloped and need help.

  7. This article is about Barack Obama's second term inauguration. He was sworn in on Jan. 20 like every other president. Since the 20 was on a Sunday they did it on the 21 but he was already president when he did his inauguration. This time he had less people than his first term.

This article affects me because his first term we were in billion dollars of debt and by bringing him back in we want him to help us back out of it. Since not as many people showed up to his inauguration it makes me think not as many people like him as president but I do. I think he was a good choice for our president. I hope he will make our country better.

  8. This article is about Obama being sworn in at an inaugural. Not as many people showed up as his past inaugural. At his ball this year the theme is Hawaiian. At the parade he was protected in a bullet proof glass. Many people have hopes with him as president. Others do not like the idea of him going for a second term.
This affects me as American citizen because if other countries don't approve with Obama's reelection, they might begin something. War, stop sending our oil supply or other important things. Then everything goes downhill in America, including economy, health, food production, and other things. Also they might try to assassinate Obama. It might be a bad thing if other countries don't like him.

  9. This article was about the old president was sworn in on January 20th at 10:55 am. Obama made the inauguration short and sweet. There was a big parade outside of the White House on Pennsylvania Avenue. Him and other VIP's were in a bullet-proof glass cased to watch the parade held in his honor.

How this article affects me is that he is and will be our president for the next 4 years so I guess we will have to get along with him.I did not watch the inauguration but some people want to. Our president has made good and bad decisions, but some people think he's great.I think it would be cool to live in the White House, but with all the security I would feel I have no personal space.

  10. This artical is about Obama getting sworn in.There wasn't as many people there as there was last time.He is going to be hosting a ball. The theme for the ball is hawaiian. He was encased in a bullet-proof glass.
This affects others because other countries may not like him being the president. They might try to kill Obama or try to make war, or try to take down the oil supply. If they do this then the economy in America will go down. The food supply may go down too.

  11. This article is about president Barack Obama getting sworn in for the second time as the president of the United States.Obama is our first african american president. He recently watched the inauguration parade. This is Obama's second at last inauguration.

This affects me in many ways because I live in the United States and he is the president.Obama could raise taxes and middle class people like my family would probably start to struggle financially. Then Obama probably wouldn't be like by many people.Obama could keep raising the debt ceiling and then he would raise taxes or borrow more money to pay off the money this country owes.

  12. This article was about how president Barack Obama was sworn in a second time. The inauguration took place on the capitol steps. When Obama rose his right hand to be sworn in that was his second time. There was a private ceremony at the White House because of a constitutional law saying that the president must be sworn in on January 20.Officials said that there was an exceptionally smaller crowd than four years ago.

Just after the inaugural ceremony the president and his watched the inaugural parade from the saftey of a bullet-proof glass case. That night the president and his family along with some of government officials chowed down on suckling pig and shook thier hips to traditional hawaiian songs at the inaugural ball. That's right, the theme of the ball was hawaiian.

This affect me as an American because this article was about the president of the United States, and as far as I know, I am an American. I'm actually glad Obama was reelected because he said he knes how to fix the economy, and the main focus right now is that.It affects me because if the economy gets better gas prices will go doown. Most of all, I will be able to pay to go to college and get a degree.

  13. This article is about president Barack Obama getting sworn in twice. Once on Sunday January 20 in private. Then he was sworn is on the 21 of January in front of a crowd. Every president is sworn in honor of our four fathers.

This could affect my life because Obama could do something horrible and be taken of the presidents place. hen we would have to get use to a new president. It would also make people mad then the would attack people then everyone would turn on everyone. If everyone turn against each other people would be horrible people and try to kill everyone.

  14. This current event is about how Barack Obama doing his anogeration. He did it on the 20th of January and on the 21st.He did it on the 20th secretly in the White house and then on the 21st in the public. The amount of people this year were'nt as large. But there were still a lot of people.

This affects me because if Barack Obama does'nt do his job our country is going down.If he does do his duty we might become a pretty good country. If that happens people won't live poor anymore.Barack Obama has helped us a little. We'll see how he does for us this term.

  15. This article is about President Obama's second inauguration. He held a private inauguration on Jan. 20 since it was a Sunday. On Jan. 21 they held the public inauguration. After he was sworn in him and a bunch of other politicians watched the inaugural parade from inside a bullet proof glass. This is his second and last inauguration.

This article affects me in many ways because live in the United States. As the president he could raise taxes. The United States could go into war with other countries and that would cost a lot of money. He could also create more jobs for Americans. As the president he could borrow more money from China and other countries.

  16. This article is about president Barack Obama's second term in office. He will start on Monday January 21,2013. He will also be sworn in the same day. He was actually sworn in on Sunday January 20,2013 secretly.

This would affect me as an American because if I was president I would not want to be sworn in twice. It would also effect me as an American because he might raise what we already owe to China and other countries. He might even raise taxes on the poor. someday he might be over throne from office.

This affects me as an American because he is our president, and he will be expected to work on the problems in our country and with our economy. Obama will probably want to end wars with other countries. Recently we are having problems with North Korea who wants to fire test missiles at the U.S. If this happens it may kill many people and may cause another war, which may cost millions of dollars. This would then add to our national debt.

  18. This artical is about Barack Obama being inaugurated for the second time this year. He was frst sworn in on 1/1/13.Then he was sworn in agin on 1/21/13. This is followed by many balls and partys.

This artical affects me greatly, because Obama might raise the taxes on us till people can bairly pay them. Even now many people are strugling with taxes. Then there is also the posobelity of war.

This article affects me as am american because Barack Obama is our President. He is the very first to be an african american president. I hope that Barack Obama helps our goverment and not make it worse. I hope that he sticks to his promises and he helps us as being a good leader.

  22. This article is mainly about our president Barack Obama. He is getting sworn back in as the president of the United States Of America for the 2nd time. He was in the inauguration parade and will be hosting a ball. Also, this will be Barack Obama's last inauguration.
This affects me as an american because he is a very big part of america, because he is the president. He has the power to make taxes higher and make it harder for the middle class. I honestly think that he should raise taxes on the upper class(wealthy people). So that they have to give away some of their money, so that we can have a little more money and we wont have to struggle so badly some times.

That day fell on a Sunday, so he had a private swearing in that day with the main public events on Monday.

This article affects me as an American because it has to do with the American government. It also affects me because it is interesting to know what is happening in Washington DC. It was also interesting to find out that he had to swear-in two times. This is how the article affected me as an America.

  26. This article is about president Barack Obama giving his inaugural speech and being accepted into office for his second term. It also talks about how the president watched the parade from a bullet-proof glass box with his wife. The White House was in security lock down because of all the people streaming into the grounds in front of it.

This article affects me as an American because Barrack Obama is going to be my president, and president to everyone around me. I believe he will lead us out of the mess we are in and serve his duty to our country well as he did before.
Others may disagree, but I still believe in my personal views.

  27. This article is about our president,Barrack Obama. He is the first african-american president. This year he went to few inaugural balls this year, he watched the inaugural parade from a bullet proof glass. One ball he went to had a hawaiian themed inaugural ball, symbolizing Hawai, the state which he was born.

This affects me because he is my new leader. He was sworn into office in MY country. I need to respect him and support him because he will be here for another four years. this will be his last term because as a president, you may only serve two four year terms.Lastly, this affects me because he decides what happens to what state and when and any desicions he makes could drastically change the way I live.

  28. Barack Obama is starting his 2 term in office he has less people that like him cause of the gun contral. He is taking the oath two time and 700.000 people is to watch it. He is going to have thousand of police for security he has bullet proof glass so he dose not get killed.

This could efect me of an Amercain cause if the presadent gets shot or dose not say the oath . It could put the USA in more help than ever in life.the end

  29. This article is about Barach Oboma being sworn in for his secound term of office. Less and less are the people turning against him becuase of the new gun laws that he has and hasen't astablished. His innaugeration will have top security and he and the more important people will be in a bullet proof basically room. I think that he would be hunted by bad people becuase of the laws he has astabalished.
This effects me becuase if Barach Obama were to be killed. All presure would be on the vice president which probably woulden't no as much as he would need to. If we had vice presidents in the place of well being we would be ikn mortell havic.
the United States would be in mortell jeopardy.

  30. This article is about Barack Obama having his second term as president. He is our first African American president. He got sworn on Monday January twenty first two thousand, thirteen. He had a private swearing on Sunday January 20, 2013

This affects me as an American because he is the president. And if we do not have a President our country would fall apart. Without a President we would not be the land of the free. This is my current event.

  31. This is about the president of the United States. He was sworn into the office twice in one day. The first inauguration had more people at it. The second one didn't have as many people at it. He used two different famous bibles. One was Abraham Lincolns and the other one was Dr. Martin Luther Kings.

This affects me as an American because if president Obama doesn't do his job the country will fall apart. If Obama does his job our country will become better than what it is today. Everyone all over the world will be able to live in peace and harmony. Maybe in the future all the homeless will have a home to stay in.

  32. This article is about President Obama's second inauguration. First he had to be sworn in on Sunday at the White House because that was the day all of the presidents get sworn to presidency. Also he did it at the White House on Sunday so that it was a private family one. This is also President Obama's last inauguration.

The inauguration is important to me because it represents a new president. Every time we get a new president it means changes in our future. The more good changes we have in our future the more people and the government can get along. If more people in the world would get along the more peace we would have and less wars.

  33. This article is about the President Barack Obama's inauguration for his second term. He had to be sworn into office on the previous Sunday. This ceremony was much smaller than the one in 2009, but despite the numbers they still had quite a few people. They had a Hawaiian ball where the dancers enjoyed native music and ate suckling pig.

This is important to me as an American because, this is our president, and without a president, we would be lost as a country. An inauguration always means a new president with new ideas, and that's always important. Even though Obama has already been president, it doesn't mean he doesn't have new ideas. I bet he has a better idea of anyone about what to do with our debt.
